His formal political career began in 1994. He came into the limelight in politics by winning the Kanakapura parliamentary seat in 1996. In the run-up to the April-May 2004 assembly elections, he toured Karnataka to revive moribund JD-S units by infusing young blood and regrouping hundreds of splintered party cadres.

In 2004, he organized the Daridra Narayana rally to fight for the rights of the urban and rural poor. During 2005 he was instrumental in organizing rallies in Tumkur to fight for the rights of backward classes

Since 1990, prior to his political baptism, Kumaraswamy produced hit films and has been in the film industry from last 15 years. He began his career as a distributor of Kannada films in the region of Mysore, Mandya, Hassan and Coorg districts. He has distributed nearly 200 Kannada films. At the crisis period in the industry during 2003, he became the founding President of the Film Producers Association. He was elected the president of the Karnataka Cinema Theatre Owners Association in 2002.

With a multifaceted personality-an agriculturist, film producer and distributor and politician Shri H D Kumara Swamy assumed charge as the 18th Chief Minister of Karnataka.
